Commemorating the Centennial of America’s involvement in “the Great War,” the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library will open its next major collection-based exhibition Buffalo Never Fails: The Queen City and World War I in November 2017 at the downtown Central Library. The exhibition will be open free and open to the public.
We encourage you to consider a sponsorship to support the Buffalo Never Fails: The Queen City and World War Iexhibition. This project cannot be accomplished without corporate and community support.
The exhibition Buffalo Never Fails: The Queen City and World War I will explore Buffalo, its people and the region’s contributions to the war effort during this globally turbulent period. Central to the exhibition will be the Library’s extraordinary collection of World War I posters, donated to the Library in 1919 by prominent Buffalonian Edward Michael. The collection includes posters from the United States, Canada and Europe representing some of the finest examples of graphically designed war propaganda, encouraging military enlistment and appealing directly to citizens to back the war effort, buy bonds, conserve food, and support the Red Cross.
Also on display will be materials about the sinking of the Lusitania, which took the life of Elbert Hubbard, writer and founder of East Aurora’s Roycroft community; local innovations and industrial mobilization that significantly contributed to both the victory and devastation of this first truly mechanized war; a war diary by local soldier Alden Rogers; popular sheet music from the era; pamphlets on a variety of wartime topics; the souvenir program of the April 1919 “Welcome to Our Boys” celebration and much more.
Special programming for adults and school groups is in development in concert with exhibition themes, and will be offered free throughout the exhibition run of approximately two years.
Buffalo Never Fails: The Queen City and World War I looks back to a critical time in our nation’s history with a sharp focus on Buffalo’s roles in the war and the consequences of it, with the intent of honoring the stories of individual heroism and sacrifice both on the battlefields and home front.
